Barbara Gough Nuss – Signed and Numbered Limited Edition (10/500) of “Lock 6 on C&O”.  Painting of “lock 6” of The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal which was started in 1828 as a dream of passage to Western wealth. Operating for nearly 100 years, the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. After closing due to competition from the railroads and the destruction of floods, the area languished in disrepair until it became a target for a parkway in the 1950s. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas rallied support for developing the canal as a linear park, and in 1971, it became a National Historical Park.

By painting landscapes directly from nature and still lifes from studio arrangements, Barbara learned the nuances of light and color on every imaginable subject.  The importance of painting from life can not be stressed enough, as photographs are inaccurate both in value and color. From 1983 to 1996 she taught still life and landscape painting in my atelier and from 1998 through the present day she shares her painting skills through area plein air workshops and atelier teaching.  Barabara is also the author of a book on landscape composition, “Secrets to Composition” .

Barbara credits her artistic development to her B.F.A. from Syracuse University, the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, experience as a graphic artist and illustrator, various workshop instructors, and her inquisitive students.  Barbara is a signature member of Oil Painters of America, National Oil & Acrylic Painter’s Society), International Guild of Realism, American Women Artists, Women Artists of the West, the Baltimore Watercolor Society and am past
