This elegant and understated umbrella stand was designed by Cuno Fischer for the esteemed maker Rosenthal (Studio Line), circa 1980. The piece offers an austere cylindrical silhouette with alternating solid grisaille bands (black, white and gray) with agitated edges. Two of the bands offer abstracted geometric hieroglyphic inscriptions. With its monochromatic palate and clean lines, this umbrella is as versatile as it is aesthetically appealing, blending perfectly with any style of interior from Classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary.
While this is a perfectly utilitarian base- ideal for storing umbrellas- it is also an object d’art in its own right that promises to beautify any surface that it graces. Rosenthal was founded in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria as a family business, and has produced some of the world’s finest porcelain and glassware products since, including collections designed by Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Walter Gropius and Piero Fornasetti among others. The piece is signed “Cuno Fischer” and inscribed “Rosenthal Germany Studio Line” on the base and is in excellent condition. Germany, circa 1980.
